Yes, this product is legitimately certified as pet food! It's government approved for pet food only!

Why? Well, sadly there's no available human certification for raw dairy products like goat kefir. Gee, if we could get our raw goat kefir certified for humans, we sure would! For now, we make it with our raw goats milk (which is certified for humans in Pennsylvania), using the same process our team makes it for their human family at home.

Plus -- raw goat kefir can not only be a great addition to your diet but your pet's diet, too! Your cats & dogs will love licking our kefir on its own in a bowl.

*Dairy shouldn't be a staple food for cats and dogs. Being carnivores (or nearly carnivores), raw meat is their essential food. Use dairy as a treat or mix in with their other food for a limited period. It's a great source of moisture and probiotics!

Our goat kefir for cats & dogs should last about 2-3 weeks after you receive it. But, of course, once it's opened there are so many variables that can affect shelf life (time out of the fridge, contaminants getting in, etc).

Make sure to keep your kefir in the back of the fridge on the bottom shelf. That's where the temperatures stay cool and consistent, creating the ideal environment to maintain the freshness of your kefir. By keeping it at the back, away from any temperature fluctuations, you're ensuring that every cup remains as delicious as the first!

Can I freeze kefir?
We don’t recommend freezing kefir. The consistency will change a lot. It will likely separate and become clumpy or grainy, which may not be the best eating experience for you.
+
Combine raw goat kefir with a little fresh fruit and some sparkling water for a refreshing probiotic drink!

Raw goat kefir can be used as a healthy and probiotic-rich alternative to yogurt or sour cream in various recipes, such as salad dressings, dips, or as a topping for baked potatoes.

What are your milk safety standards?
Milk safety is a top priority. Although it's not required for raw pet dairy, Crystal Brook Farms is certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for raw milk production and bottling for humans in PA. They test regularly for both general bacteria counts as well as specific pathogens. It's this milk that's turned into raw kefir.

What does the "best by" date mean exactly?
The best by date is an estimate for when the yogurt will likely become too sour to palate. It may start souring before that, but we're kinda guaranteeing it won't be too terribly sour before that date.

What is kefir?
It’s a fermented milk drink. It’s tangy, similar to yogurt, but sourer. Our kefir will almost always be more sour than sweet, and will likely be more sour than store bought.

The kefir is watery on top. What should I do?
Separation with kefir is perfectly normal. You simply need to shake to recombine.

How long is it fermented for?
Our kefir is fermented overnight for about 12 hours.

Can I make my own kefir with it?
This is a contested issue. You might experience some kitchen magic and be able to make more kefir starting with our kefir at home. But, for the best possibility of success, you should start with real kefir grains. You won't find that in this product, as we use a freeze dried culture instead of grains.

What breed are your goats?
Our milking goats are crosses between Alpine, Saanen, and Nubian goats.

What are the goats fed?
The goats have free access to pasture year round. However, in the hot summer, they usually choose to stay in the barn. When they're not eating forage at pasture, they are fed a GMO-free, corn-free, soy-free, and chemical-free feed from a farmer that raises and mixes the grains himself. Feed contains barley, oats, peas, alfalfa, and minerals.

Is your goat kefir A2/A2?
Yes! All goats naturally produce A2/A2 milk. This is because goats (and all mammals) did not undergo a genetic mutation like cows do.

Our mild kefir is made simply:
1. We warm our raw, pasture-raised goats milk for cats & dogs to room temperature.
2. A touch of freeze dried culture is mixed in.
3. The kefir sits and ferments at room temp for about 12 hours.
4. After a final stir, it's all set to be bottled.
